Toleration Free Living - Creating a Home That's a Haven
by rima - Wednesday, 9 April 2008, 07:03 PM
Anyone in the world

By Kammie Kobyleski Are you looking to increase energy and decrease those pesky energy vampires? Today well throw open the windows, shed some light on things and air it out! Sound familiar? Get up, feed pets, kids, spouse, (forget to feed self), get ready, arrive at work late, fight off negative co-worker, race the clock to beat the deadline, field crazy calls from irate customers, skip lunch, fight traffic, get home, search for un-burnt spatula, cook, trip over pile of laundry in dining room, dodge telemarketing calls, feed others, tune out barking dogs, and nosey neighbors, (insert your own random evening antics here), brush teeth (or not), ignore magazines on bedside table, and collapse into bed. Alarm goes off, repeat entire paragraph I dont know about you, but just reading that wipes me out. So, how do you beat those energy suckers once and for all? STOP tolerating them and face them head on. Its time to take back your energy, take back your power and move one step closer to living the life you were meant to live. Ready to get started? Home-base: Your home is your safe haven. Your home needs to support and nurture you. Its the place where you recharge your batteries. You fight off so many energy drainers all day, when you come home, the point is to breath, relax and get super-charged! If you want to change your life, know that change requires energy and energy requires action. Where does that lead us? To take ACTION! Write it down: Yes, initially a list is required. No you wont be to doing yourself to death. Decreasing tolerations requires seeing it ALL in black and white. List all the things in your home that you are tolerating. Tolerations are energy drains disguised as stains in the carpet, too many spatulas, kids clothes they grew out of, overflowing medicine cabinets, stacks of magazines, and junk mail - do you see where this is going? Write it all down. ALL of it. Prioritize it: Place these tasks in number order. It doesnt matter if your list is 100 long, start with 1 and get moving. Mixing up the difficult ones with the easy tasks increases momentum. How good will you feel when you can actually eat at the dining room table? How will it feel to open the medicine cabinet without the aspirin falling out each time you reach for the toothpaste? Imagine your life - only simplified and streamlined. Break it down: The key to tackling energy suckers is to take bite sized pieces. 30 minutes to 1-hour projects work best. Set a timer for 30 minutes. Then pick one mini project off the list, crank up the tunes and get after it! By breaking your tasks down, youve taken any pressure off yourself to tackle the whole thing at once. How much easier is Im just cleaning out these drawers for 30 minutes than, Ive got to clean this entire kitchen! Itll take me days to get through all of this! By breaking it down, you allow yourself little victories every day. Hold yourself accountable: Mark your half hour projects on your calendar. Hold yourself really accountable for making it happen. Think of these tasks as you would any other appointment on your day planner. Tackling the kitchen for four evenings at 30 minutes an evening would give you 2 hours of work in one week. Your kitchen would be on its way to clean and clutter free with a minimum time investment on your part. Create a multi-sensory environment: Your sanctuary. Your safe haven. Your casa. Your castle. Whatever you call it, create a home that works FOR you, not against you. Get your carpets cleaned. You can hire a professional for around $99. Keep your hardwoods dust free. Water your plants (they need love too). Keep relaxing, calming music on hand and at your fingertips. Invest in quality aromatherapy candles and incense. Purchase a couple of really soft throw pillows and blankets. Keep your couch snuggle friendly. Create a reserve of your favorite healthy snacks and have them available at all times. Creating a life you truly love is like creating a work of art. What do you want it to look like? Smell like? Taste like? Sound like? Does your home nourish your spirit and feed your soul? If not, isnt it time you air it out? Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. Its not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; its when you had everything to do, and youve done it. -Margaret Thatcher Kammie Kobyleski has been having coaching conversations her whole life. White Sun - The Human Character
by rima - Tuesday, 8 April 2008, 08:58 PM
Anyone in the world

By Teow Aun Chew Whether the human character is good or evil depends on which one of the Li-xing, Qi-xing and Zhi-xing (True, Spiritual and Materialistic Character respectively) dominates. The True character is the essence of Tao as well as the soul of a human. It is all good and has no evil. The Spiritual character is the yang (positive) side of the Tai-ji (Tai-ji is yin and yang. Tai-ji Qi-tien means Heaven of Spirit with yin and yang), which is evolved from Tao, and the property of a humans hun (Spirit of consciousness). It is sometimes pure and sometimes contaminated. Therefore, it can be good or evil. The Materialistic Character is the yin (negative) side of Tai-ji, and the property of a humans Po (Spirit of sense). It is all desires for materialism and all evils without any goodness. If ones True Character dominates, he will act in accordance with the five virtues of Tao. Everything he does will always conform to the center and harmony or righteous. If his Spiritual Character dominates, he may be good sometimes and evil at other times. If his Materialistic Character dominates, he will be deeply pulled by materialism and the consequence is that his temperament will is almost all evil and hardly any good. When Mencius said that the original human character is all good, what he described is the True Character of the soul. When Gao-zi said that the original human character can be good or evil, what he described is the Spiritual Character of the Hun (Spirit of consciousness). When Xun-zi said that the original human character is all evil, what he described is the Materialistic Character of the Po (Spirit of sense). Mencius, Gao-zi and Xun-zi were Confucian scholars. By stressing the True Character over the Spiritual Character, Mencius is honored as a Saint. Stressing the Spiritual Character, Gao-zi did not understand the True Character, and could only be honored as a Sage. Stressing the Materialistic Character and the desires for materialism, Xun-zi did not understand either the True Character or the Spiritual Character, and he was neither a Saint nor a Sage, but an ordinary person. In brief, the three Confucian scholars expressed their concepts regarding the original human character differently because of the different level of understanding of Tao. The human world is in the stage of confronting each other because of the different in human character. If the True Character dominates him, he will not initiate any confrontation or kill because it is all good and no evil. What he will do is to seek for solution so that both will live in peace if there is any difference or enmity. If the Spiritual Character dominates him, he may take revenge and do evil or even kill. If the Materialistic Character dominates him, he will initiate confrontation and may act like an animal not knowing what is right or what is wrong. The human conscience is lost and has no direction of love and brotherhood in this world. My Heavenly Teacher JiGong asked and said, What intent did you bear today; a good intent, a bad intent, or a natural intent? If Bad exists, Good also exists. If you wish to have the Good now, you must accept the fruit of bitterness (suffer). To do good deed is to compensate for the bad you have done in the past. You must take the Good to control the Bad, so that you can put an end to the (bad or negative) causes that you have sown in the past. T.A Chew did not understand in his younger days why people want to cheat when he saw someone cheating. After forty years the person that he saw cheating is having a very lousy life and one of his sons is a drug addict. Another son got into a fight and killed someone. His wife left him and married another person far away. Choosing the Perfect Wedding Ring
by rima - Tuesday, 8 April 2008, 01:15 PM
Anyone in the world

By Samantha Taylor Traditionally, a wedding band was worn on the ring finger of the left hand because it was believed that the vein in that finger went straight to the heart. A wedding ring is a piece of jewelry which will be worn everyday of your life to signify your love and fidelity to your significant other. That being said, you want to ensure you choose the perfect ring, which can be difficult for someone who is inexperienced in this area. Luckily we can help you through the steps of finding the perfect wedding ring for the special person in your life. The first thing to consider is the kind of metal you want for your wedding rings. Most wedding rings are found in yellow gold, white gold or platinum. These forms of metal vary in price and most likely this decision will be quite easy since most women already know what kind of ring they want. The next step is choosing the stone for the ring. You will need to decide which kind of stone you want as well as the shape of the stone. Diamonds are still the most popular choice when it comes to stones for wedding rings however colored stones such as emeralds, rubies and sapphires are becoming more and more popular. The last step is to find a reputable jeweler who you will be comfortable purchasing such an expensive piece of jewelry from. Perhaps it is best to use a jeweler who one of your friends or family members have already used and would recommend for you because of such great results. If you are like most couples who are marrying, you will likely choose a diamond wedding ring. If you are doing so, you may want to keep the four C's in mind while doing so. The four C's are the diamond's color, cut, clarity and carat weight.
Color Diamonds are available in number of colors and shades including white, yellow, green, blue and pink. The color range starts at D and moves through the alphabet towards Z. The scale moves from white to yellow as it makes its way through the alphabet. Cut The cut of the diamond is what gives the diamond personality. Diamonds which are cut well will be bright and sparkly, however diamonds that are cut poorly may end up looking dull and boring. Choosing and making sure the cut is perfect is a crucial step in the overall outcome of your wedding ring. Clarity An inclusion in a diamond is an imperfection inside the stone which will greatly affect the overall worth of the ring. The size, color and position of the inclusions in your ring affect the clarity of the diamond. You want to ensure the diamond has good clarity. Carat Weight A carat is divided into 100 equal parts (also known as points). Therefore a one carat diamond equals 100 points; half carat equals 50 and so on. When the diamonds are loose (before they are mounted on the ring), the weight is easy to determine, however, after the diamond has been mounted only a gemologist can determine the weight of the diamond(s).
Take your time when choosing a wedding ring for yourself or for your significant other. A wedding ring is a sign of your everlasting love to one another and is something that will be cherished for the rest of your lives. A Brief History of Plastic Surgery
by rima - Sunday, 6 April 2008, 03:42 PM
Anyone in the world

By Jeanette Pollock The word "plastic" has come to mean "artificial" to people in our society today, but that's not where plastic surgery gets its name. The "plastic" in plastic surgery derives from "plastikos," a Greek word that means "to mold or shape." Although we tend to think of cosmetic surgery when someone mentions plastic surgery, plastic surgeons have a long history of performing physical reconstruction. Skin grafts, which are a form of plastic surgery, were performed in India as long ago as 800 B.C. By the fourth century A.D., surgeons in Byzantium had developed fairly sophisticated methods of fine suturing to prevent scarring. More significant reconstruction became part of the plastic surgery universe in the 18th century, when an American surgeon repaired a cleft palate, and in the 19th century the development of general anesthesia for surgery helped make plastic surgery more widely acceptable once people realized they no longer had to be wide awake to experience pain. Surgery in general became more commonplace as antibiotics and an understanding of the importance of modern sanitary measures made all forms of surgery less dangerous. World War I, which maimed thousands of soldiers, was the crucible in which many plastic surgery specialists were formed. Doctors developed methods for reconstructing ears, noses, jaws and eyes, and compared notes across national boundaries after the war. New techniques and materials are continually being developed in plastic surgery that can repair an ever-wider range of physical deformities, and many that make cosmetic surgery procedures easier, more comfortable, and more affordable than ever before. How to Get Out of a Marketing Slump
by rima - Tuesday, 1 April 2008, 07:39 PM
Anyone in the world

By Debbie LaChusa My 16-year-old daughter plays fast-pitch softball. It's her goal to earn a college scholarship and this is her year to market herself to colleges and make that dream happen. Unfortunately, she found herself in a batting slump over the past few months. Not exactly what you want when you've invited college recruiters to come see you play! We knew we had to do something so we hired a batting coach. And the other night as I was watching her coach work with her, I realized what she was doing to get out of her slump and reach her goals is no different from what we should do when we find ourselves in a marketing slump. What is a Marketing Slump? It's when your marketing isn't delivering the results you want. It's when you're working as hard as you possibly can and you still aren't attracting enough clients, generating enough sales or making enough money. So what steps was my daughter taking to break out of her batting slump that we can also take to break out of our marketing slump? (1) First, she's getting advice and coaching from an expert. Someone who knows how to do what she wants to do and has a track record of producing great results. The big "aha" here is she realized she couldn't do it on her own. (2) She's learning a new technique. Her old technique wasn't working anymore. It's going to take her some time to break the old habit, but she's committed because she wants to be successful. (3) She's practicing the new technique consistently until she masters it. Old habits die hard. By constantly practicing the new habit, she'll eventually be able to replace the old ineffective swing with the new swing. (4) She receives constant feedback from her coach. I was amazed as I watched them work together. After every single swing, he stopped her, told her what she was doing right, and provided additional instruction where she needed it. It's a constant relay of practice, feedback and practice some more. You can do the same to get out of your marketing slump. (1) Seek expert advice from someone with proven results. Subscribing to and reading this ezine is a great start. But ask yourself if that's enough to really turn your marketing around. Or would getting involved in a marketing program or getting private coaching get you where you want to go faster? (2) Learn a new technique. Is what you're doing bringing you the level of success you really want? If not, you may need to learn a new system. (3) Practice this new technique consistently until you master it. You don't just read a book or take a course and say "I learned how to market my business." It's a constant practice. You learn ways to market differently, techniques to help you be more successful and then you practice and fine-tune them until you master them. (4) Solicit constant feedback. Marketing your own business can be a challenge if you're working in a vacuum. It's tough to look at what you're doing objectively. Build in ways to get constant feedback. Hire a coach. Ask for feedback from your customers. Do a survey. Track your results. I know it's only a matter of time before my daughter breaks out of her slump. How do I know? Because she's committed to success and she's doing whatever it takes to achieve it. You can do the same with your business. Decide what you want to achieve. And commit to doing whatever it takes to achieve it. Who knows you may not only break out of your marketing slump, you may hit a home run! Archiving Our Families
by rima - Sunday, 30 March 2008, 05:50 PM
Anyone in the world

By Carolina Fernandez We do not remember days. We remember moments. Casare Pavese A couple of weeks ago, a dear reader emailed me for help on documenting her familys life and history. For several generations, we knew this as stuffing pictures in shoe boxes. If we were super-organized, we used photo albums. Today, we call this scrapbooking. The fastest growing hobby in our countrywith more than 25 million Americans, or 1 in every four households, participatingit didnt even exist as an industry eighteen years ago, when I first contemplated how I would document and organize our own family photosor memories as they are now called. Less than ten years old as an industry, scrapbooking holds more than 52, 000 sites on the Internet; over 4,000 retail stores support this multi-billion dollar industry and even traditional stores such as office supply giants, pharmacies, groceries, and gift shops all carry a sampling of scrapbooking products. The maze isto me anywaycompletely overwhelming. To even partially navigate its many avenues both exhausts and bewilders me. When you calculate the time and expense required to not only take quality photos (a high quality 35 mm camera, digital camera, and video camera are all practically required paraphernalia), it boggles ones mind to add in the additional cost of documenting your pix once developed. The average scrapper spends $50 per month on her hobby, or roughly $600 a year in supplies. Scrapbook papers generally cost anywhere from 10 cents a piece to upwards of 50 cents a piece (while browsing online sites I came across some fabulous specialty papers for my military enthusiast son, so I purchased papers with a military theme; they cost 45 cents a pop plus shipping) Add to that the cost of stickers, brads, and trinketsall totally adorable in their own riteand your personal scrapbooking arsenal just escalated another couple hundred degrees. And what about ink pads and rubber stamps? Gotta have those, too. At anywhere from a couple dollars to ten to twelve dollars for a decent stampas well as several dollars per each ink pad (gotta have all those wonderful colors, you know!)youre by now in this stuff too deep to escape fiscally unscathed. And we havent even gotten to embossing yet. Oh, geez. So whats a rocket mom to do? Practically speaking, at what point do you jump onto the scrapbooking craze while maintaining all of the other parenting strategies deemed so important in raising brilliant kids? I mean: can you really instill a musical heritage into your kids, immerse them into sports and exercise, and shape their character and help them to become more spiritually matureand scrapbook all at the same time? Are there really enough hours in the day to get in a good workout at the gym, get dinner on the tableand scrapbook? Can you add community service to your calendar as well as add colorful borders to your family photos? And is it really possible to hammer in that decorative brad (which seriously requires a good whack on the kitchen cutting board) and keep the baby down for a nap all at the same time?!? OK. Enough already. Heres my advice on getting your arms around the whole scrapbooking/creative memories/documenting-your-family-history thing: Find an organizational scheme that you think you can stick with over the next dozen years or so. Trust me: motherhood, while certainly easier in some ways over the years, does not get any less demanding. You just shift areas in which you spend your time. Time, money, and energy are your three most valuable resources todayand they will continue to be until the day you go up. So find a system to which you believe you can reasonably commit. If the whole idea of scrapbooking each and every page of your baby journals wears you out (as it would me), then switch to a system that is less creatively taxing. My personal choice: photo albums from Exposures. (www.exposures.com) Theyve been in business long enough that I trust theyll be there as long as we all still need their stuff. The last thing you need to worry about while selecting a system is the possibility of changing it mid-stream. I researched their product line until I was nauseous. I wound up using over-sized, attractive three-ring binders (offered in three different colors) that work perfectly for our family. I buy a few at a time so I know Ill never run out. I also buy their archival scrapbook paper, and use old-fashioned photo corners for every picture. You might want to look for albums that are offered in a variety of colors, in case youd like to color-code your family. (see http://www.selfhelpcenters.com/family.asp#1 for my recent article Color-Coding Your World) Decide if you want to be a documenter or a scrapper. Theres a world of difference here. Documenters organize their pictures once retrieved from the store (pharmacy, Costco, etc.) and then put them into albums. Sureyou can add titles, captions, dates, and quick journal entries. You can even use color! But you dont spend an inordinate amount of time on each page. Scrappers, on the other hand, make each page of photos a veritable work of art. They use artsy background papers; crop each photo; add beautiful borders; make great use of sticker art, brads, and trinkets; and punch designs to coordinate with the page theme. You should decide which path youre likely to travel down as soon as possible. Like it or not, you need to get your systema system, any systemdown before you take the plunge, as each system requires a hefty financial commitment. (The only inexpensive alternative is to buy cheap albums from a discount store (with those old-fashioned non-archival magnetic pages) and throw in your photos. You wouldnt do that, Im sure) Start collecting art and craft supplies. Regardless of which system you use, your childrens happy childhoods require that you spend time doing art. Make regular art days part of your familys weekly schedule. Those rubber stamps and ink pads that youre picking up on sale now will become a wonderful collection down the road. Lets face it: you need colored markers, pencils, pens, paints and papers anyway. They all add to your childrens artistic development. So perhaps documenting or scrapping your familys memories will be part of your regular art day for the next few years. OKso youre not going to take up sculpting for awhileor oil painting, rug hooking, or knitting. Thats alright. Just stay on track, keep picking up supplies, continue to browse art supply stores, and purchase fun stuff as you see fit. If you find yourself drawn to fancy papers and expensive stickersgo ahead and splurge. Youre going to need some of this stuff anyway, so try to make thoughtful and purposeful buying decisions rather than compulsive ones! Try to stay on top of things. But dont beat yourself up if you fall behind. I always tried to use holidays and summers to catch up with my albums, but with major moves in four of the past six summers, those plans went to pieces. So I am terribly behind in organizing and documenting my familys life. OK. So life goes on. I just commit that when I have time Ill renew my photo journey. Its a process. Itll never be finishedso I dont let myself get all whacky over it. If possible, though, you should come up with some system: perhaps you are on the ball enough that each and every time you pick up pix from the developer, you immediately put them into albums. Youd get an extra cherry in your sundae at my house. Perhaps after you pick up your pix you throw them all into a large drawer, with the hopes of organizing them one day. (Thats been me these last few years.) OK. So thats a system, too. Just be sure that one day isnt too far into the future, promise?!? Figure out where this all fits into your familys direction. You may be committed to too many thingsprofessionally and personally. This may simply have too small a role in your familys purpose. The commitment of energy alone to the whole scrapping thing might wear you out, leaving you feeling totally unglued and unable to do the other things in which you are truly passionate about! Thats OK!!!!! Maybe this just isnt your time!!! Stop beating yourself up. You may prefer to use your fingers teaching your child to finger-paint, your lap rocking your newborn, and your energy driving your kids to music lessons. You might rather use your discretionary funds supporting a missionary rather than spending it on pretty background papers for family photos. I cant tell you whats right for you. I can only help do the heavy lifting. So Ive done the research, evaluated some of the options, and am presenting them to you for your ultimate decision. I can help to equip youand encourage youto propel you to excellence. But in the end, this is your archiving. Above all, dont stress about this. Spend time your kids first and foremostand these decisions will fall easily into place in due time. Common Law Marriage: Be Careful!
by rima - Saturday, 29 March 2008, 11:07 PM
Anyone in the world

By Gabriel Heiser Back in the early days of our country, when justices of the peace and clergy were harder to find and the population more spread out, there arose the concept of a "common law" marriage. The basic idea was that if a man and a woman held themselves out to the community as married, and considered themselves to be husband and wife in all their dealings with the public and themselves, then the law would recognize them as such. At the present time, only about a dozen states still recognize a common law marriage formed under their own laws. However, under the U.S. Constitution's "full faith and credit" provision, a common law marriage valid in any one of these dozen states will be recognized as a legal marriage in all of the other states. Unfortunately, because there is no piece of paper to point to, whether a couple will be recognized as married for purposes of state law (and hence federal law, which follows state law on this determination) is a facts and circumstances test. Here are some of the factors that judges have looked at in making a determination that a couple were married at common law:

living together
holding themselves out as married to the general community
exchange of wedding rings
attending holiday celebrations and family gatherings together
traveling together
filing income taxes marked as married individuals
completing medical records as married
sharing domestic responsibilities Here are some factors that weighed against a couple being considered in a common law marriage:

the female's reference to her partner as her "boyfriend" or "partner" to emergency medical personnel
failure of one partner to indicate she was married when applying for a mortgage
holding themselves as married only to a small circle of friends and co-workers but not the general community Because tax returns are signed under the penalties of perjury, they are particularly persuasive to a court in making this determination. Why is this important? There are many legal consequences, rights, and responsibilities that depend on a determination of marital status. For example:

A surviving spouse is entitled to a certain percentage of a deceased spouse's estate if the spouse died with no will; if declared to be unmarried, that surviving "spouse" gets nothing.
A surviving spouse is entitled to a certain percentage of a deceased spouse's estate if the spouse had a will but omitted or left little to the other "spouse"; this is called an "elective share" and could be as much as 50% of the deceased spouse's estate.
With larger estates, only a legal spouse can claim the unlimited marital deduction, saving thousands of dollars in estate taxes.
Only legal spouses can file income taxes as "married filing jointly."
Only a legal spouse would have certain rights and access to medical records under federal and state laws.
Only a legal spouse is entitled to the Social Security payments of a deceased spouse. Sometimes it's actually better not to be determined to be married. For example, a healthy spouse's own assets must be "spent down" on a disabled spouse residing in a nursing home, before Medicaid coverage of the nursing home costs will be allowed. If the couple is not married, then only the nursing home partner's assets are counted, protecting an unlimited amount of assets of the healthy partner. As you can see, important monetary and other benefits turn on the legal determination of whether there was or was not a common law marriage. In most cases there are benefits to the spouse; in some cases there are disadvantages. In any case, this should be thought through by the couple so that they do not get caught unaware! If in doubt, the couple should go downtown and sign that little piece of paper indicating they are officially married. That would end all questions! 2007 by K. Gabriel Heiser Attorney K. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christian_N]Christian N A student loan is a loan that is granted to a college student enrolled in courses full or part time for at least one semester or quarter and who have declared a major with the intent of pursuing a degree of higher education. Student loans can be granted through various lenders with a governmental guarantee, or can be granted from private lenders with no guarantee. Some student loans do not require a parent's signature, while others do. The government guaranteed student loan is classified by two types, subsidized and unsubsidized. The subsidized student loans have a yearly limit and allow for the government to pay the interest on the loan while the student is in school. The unsubsidized student loan allows for a higher yearly limit, but the student must pay the interest while in school, or the accrued interest will be added onto the balance of the loan and is the responsibility of the student during repayment. A student loan can be deferred while the student is in school half time indefinitely. Private student loans usually have a set period of deferment, 2-5 years, and then the student must begin repayment regardless of whether or not they have completed their education. Currently, student loans have the best interest rates in town. As the interest rate index rises, so will the student loan rate. During low rate times, many scramble to consolidate their student loans. This saves a tremendous amount of interest in the long run, since a student loan repayment plan can extend over 25 years depending on the loan balance. Those students with an extremely low student loan balance ($5,000 or less) usually only have the typical 5 or 10 year repayment option. A student loan is eligible to be used for tuition, books, on campus housing and childcare expenses. Some student loans allow for the purchase of an automobile to get to and from school, or other pertinent school materials such as a computer or to pay off other student loan debt. Many students today are counting on student loans for their education. What they are not realizing when they sign the student loan promissory note is the debt they are incurring for a very long time after their schooling has been completed. The average student loan balance is upwards of $50,000 for a four year degree. Add to that professional education costs, and some students will have over $150,000 in student loan debt. While the investment of an education is always a wise idea because investing in one's mind will never diminish in value, the costs associated with this investment and the income expected to earn should be carefully evaluated. Some careers do not warrant a high enough salary to repay the loans. Grants and scholarships should always be considered as alternatives to obtaining student loan debt.
