Replanting Your Christmas Tree
by clemie - Sunday, 6 April 2008, 06:26 PM
Anyone in the world

By Ted Roberson If you are in the market for a beautiful evergreen to be added to your landscape, Christmas is a perfect time to begin shopping. While most Christmas shoppers purchase a Christmas tree that has already been chopped at the bottom, there are several nurseries that offer live Christmas trees with the roots still intact. This means you can fill a space in your landscape with the Christmas tree that you enjoyed all season long. This is also a great way to recycle your Christmas tree instead of simply throwing away one of natures precious resources. The most important factor in finding a Christmas tree to replant is to find a tree that will transplant well after the holidays. Of course, the success of replanting a Christmas tree truly lies in the hands of the nursery where you receive the evergreen tree, as it is essential that they take extreme care of the roots by immediately placing them in burlap once the Christmas tree is removed from the ground. A good nursery will also point you in the direction of a healthy Christmas tree and will point out which evergreens do best in replant situations. Most nurseries will suggest a pine, spruce or fir, all hardy varieties of the evergreen. Keep in mind that when you are purchasing a replant Christmas tree, it will be more expensive than a tree that you will purchase just for the holiday season. While trees can cost anywhere from $30-$100 to purchase already chopped, a tree with roots intact may cost between $50-$200. Although you might want to save money, it really is better to spend a little extra money and get a healthy, sturdy tree with long branches and a large root ball so that you will have transplant success. Another important piece of advice regarding the replanting of your Christmas tree is to give the tree a 3-4 day transitional period in between the outdoors and indoors. This goes for both bringing the Christmas tree home as well as returning it to the outdoors. Otherwise your tree may suffer from shock because of the drastic difference in temperature. It is essential whether the tree is indoors or outdoors to keep it covered with more than the burlap sack for moisture and protection. You may want to try straw, a blanket, saw dust, or even old towels or newspaper. Of course while the tree is inside the home, the roots and the covering can be hidden by a beautiful decorative tree skirt. Whether the tree is inside or out, it will need to be watered regularly to prevent it from drying up or dying. This will most likely mean placing the root ball inside a large tub or bucket so that the roots can suck up the necessary nutrients. Again, this might be a tricky task while the tree is inside the home. Horticulturists recommend that in order for your Christmas tree replanting to go well, do not leave the tree in the home for any longer than two weeks. If at all possible, try to limit the time the tree is inside to a week or slightly longer. Once your secondary transition period of 3-4 days is over, it is time to plant the tree in the ground. As long as your climate zone does not experience freezing early in the winter season, you should have no problem planting the tree right after the Christmas holiday. If you think your climate zone may experience early freezing, then you may want to pre-dig the hole for your root ball, although this may mean guessing the size of the root ball. Once you have replaced the soil, it is essential to water the tree and mulch it to keep in the warmth of your newly transplanted Christmas tree. Gastric Bypass Complication: Gastrogastric Fistula
by clemie - Saturday, 5 April 2008, 01:06 PM
Anyone in the world

By Kaye Bailey While the success rate of gastric bypass surgery is very good, complications from the weight loss surgery do occur. One of the rare complications is a gastrogastric fistula or leak in the newly reduced stomach pouch. Recently a LivingAfterWLS reader named Margo suffered such a complication. She had surgery on July 11th. On August 18th she suffered a setback when a gastrogastric fistula was identified in the surgical area of her stomach. The fistula was identified with an upper gastrointestinal contrast study (UGI). A fistula is an abnormal connection between an organ, vessel or intestine that results from trauma or surgery. In gastric bypass the separation of the gastric pouch from the main stomach decreases the incidence of fistula formation and stomal ulcer but does not eliminate it. Leakage of ingested food through the fistula may allow the small pouch to empty faster, leading to increased volume of meals and increased appetite. Patients stop losing weight or begin regaining weight. Surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the fistula. In Margo's case the leakage was causing vague symptoms such as nausea a couple of hours after eating. She said after two times of trying to vomit producing nothing but bile she knew her pouch was working. Margo added, "Luckily, after that I kept myself from retching, or I might have made it worse. I felt increasing but very vague pain in my stomach, but not necessarily in the area I knew my pouch resided. I went back to liquids only, and that did not help, either. This lead to the Upper GI." Fortunately she was early enough post-op on a limited liquid and soft food diet that she did not experience peritonitis, inflammation of the abdominal organs due to bacteria from the intestinal gastric contents. After the fistula was identified Margo was put on IV feeding and her weight loss has stopped. She said, "I am hanging in, but just barely. Still glad I had WLS, though, and glad I discovered LivingAfterWLS." Nearly a month after identifying the fistula Margo is still on the IV feed but is able to add a few things to her diet. "I have had a second Upper GI and the fistula has improved a bit. My doctor now has me drinking liquids: when I get up to 48 oz of liquid, and 400 calories (of protein drink) for "several days" I can abandon the IV feeding and go back to square one. I'll spend 2 weeks on a liquid diet, and then begin to add soft foods. I'll have at least one or two more UGI's." Margo says it hasn't been easy to keep a positive spirit. "I want to add my positive spirit does not come naturally-I have been deeply depressed, but at least now I have something to aim for, and that has helped quite a bit." Take a minute to send some warm vibes her way, and leave her a comment here. I'm sure she'd love to know how much we are pulling for her. She said, "I appreciate your prayers and interest a lot, and am determined to muddle through this setback-and any others thrown my way-because I want to continue to lose weight so I can live!" Sewing A Neat No Bulk Flared Hem
by clemie - Friday, 4 April 2008, 02:34 AM
Anyone in the world

By Marian Lewis When sewing a flared skirt, do you have a problem with a too much bulk in the hem? Here is the answer for a smooth finish. Face a circular or flared skirt hem with bias. Cut a 5-6 inch wide bias strip of organza or light weight lining fabric long enough to fit the lower edge of the skirt. Piece the strip on the straight of grain of the fabric to create the length you need. Mark the desired hemline on the skirt with chalk or basting thread. For medium flared skirts, trim off the lower edge 1-1/2 inches below the marked line. For circular flares, trim off 1 inch below the marked line. Fold the organza/lining fabric strip in half lengthwise with right sides out. Baste the two bias edges of the strip together. Slightly stretching the raw edges of the bias, stitch it to the outside of the skirt at the lower edge with raw edges meeting. Do not stretch the hem Join the ends of the bias at one side seam of the skirt. Press the seam toward the bias. Turn up the hem on the marked line and baste along the lower fold edge. With the skirt wrong side up, press the bias lightly and gently shape the bias strip to fit inside the skirt. Pin in place. Slip stitch the upper fold of the bias to the inside of the skirt. Look how nice and neat it is! If you are hemming a straight edge, there is no need to stretch the bias. This is a great technique to use when you hem pleated garments or any heavy fabric to help lessen the bulk and create a nice finished look. Try it! It just makes sense! 2006 Marian Lewis - All Rights Reserved - 1st Step To Sewing Success Marian Lewis is a sewing instructor and the creator of an amazing new fitting method for hard-to-fit sewing folks. Attorney Fees - Part 1 - Legal Fees and Fee Agreement
by clemie - Tuesday, 1 April 2008, 09:12 PM
Anyone in the world

By Steve Dimeck This is Part 1 of this 4-part article. Please refer to the other 3 parts to read this article in full. Understanding the attorney fees would help you control your finances a whole lot better and help you make better financial decisions when working with your lawyer. The attorney fees could get substantial, and if you don't fully understand them your bank account would very soon. Before you enter into a legal agreement with your chosen attorney, it would be in your best interest to have an understanding of the attorney fees so you can build a strong client-attorney working relationship with your lawyer without any financial disputes, which on the other hand would help your lawyer fully focus on your case. Provided here are overviews of attorney fees that you may expect when hiring a lawyer. But this is just to inform you. Always clearly communicate with your attorney the legal fees that apply to your case and don't stop asking your attorney until you gain a full understanding of the legal costs that you will be responsible for. Legal Fees Some attorneys who enjoy higher reputation may charge more than the ones who don't. But, those well-reputed lawyers may get the work done faster. The keyword here is "may." That's because lawyers consider several factors when setting their fees. It depends on how complicated your case is and the amount of time it will take to resolve the matter. Even though the trial itself may not take that long, researching the law, gathering the facts, interviewing witnesses, preparing all the needed documentation and arguments for the trial may take days, weeks and even months. In some cases unexpected developments may take place that will complicate your situation even further, which would result in higher fees. You need to feel comfortable when discussing fees with your lawyer. Actually, you and your lawyer can negotiate almost any type of fee agreement. Besides the fee that you may pay for your first meeting, your lawyer could offer you a fixed, hourly, retainer, contingency, or a statutory fee. In addition to that, the same lawyer might charge more for the time spent in the courtroom than for hours spent in the office or library. But, you can agree to any one or a combination of these fees. The most common billing method is to charge a set amount for each hour of time the lawyer works on your case. What will work for you is what you need to discuss with your attorney and find a medium that will work for both of you. Don't forget that your main goal is winning your case. The fees need not to spin you out of focus that may result in losing your case. On the other hand, if one attorney is not willing to meet you half way in regards to your ability in making the payment, consider talking to another attorney. Fee Agreement You need to get your fee agreement in writing. By law, contingency fees and non-contingency fees anticipated to be $1,000 or more must be in writing. But, it's best to get any fee arrangement in writing no matter the amount because it provides a written record. This way, both you and your lawyer will know what to expect from each other as you work together on your case. Also, it steers clear from any confusion and misunderstanding that may affect your outcome. Try to avoid making oral agreements. But if you do make one with your lawyer, make a written note of it. Your fee agreement needs to include what services are and aren't covered under that agreement as well as the type and amount of fees you will be expected to pay. Also, the agreement might spell out your obligations as a client, as well as how the court fees and miscellaneous expenses will be handled. It could explain the attorney's billing practices and state whether the lawyer is going to add interest or other charges to unpaid amounts. The lawyer may have a pre-printed fee agreement for you to sign. However, nothing is set in stone. You can always ask the lawyer to change parts of the agreement or make up a new one especially for your situation. If you're not sure what to ask your lawyer regarding your fee agreement, feel free to bring some one with you at your initial meeting to help you out. Do not sign the agreement if you don't fully understand it. Also, do not sign it if something you have requested is not included or vice versa. You need to read it and fully understand it. Once you sign it, you fully agree to it. That's important because if you have agreed to (signed) something that you "didn't really agree" (as a result of not reading the agreement), or didn't want, or didn't fully understand, legal fees can add up very fast and cost you an arm and a leg. When you get your bill, it's too late. Every story that you can read about people complaining against their attorneys regarding fees, it's because the client signed up to something that they didn't fully understand. Or, they've made oral agreements with no record. Fee Arrangements - covered in Part 2 of this article. School Shopping: Less is Better for Your Wallet and Your Kids
by clemie - Thursday, 27 March 2008, 10:18 PM
Anyone in the world

By Pauline Wallin, Ph.D. Attention parents: It's back-to-school shopping time. This year, do your kids a favor by NOT buying them everything they claim they need. Of course, you will probably purchase some clothes, shoes, and school supplies. But when it comes to expensive name brands, sports logos, celebrity-licensed items and electronic equipment, it's better to set limits -- not only for the sake of your wallet, but also because it is psychologically healthier for your children. Here's why: - Kids who get everything they want develop expectations that this will always be the case. This leaves them ill prepared to deal with the world later, as adults. - Kids who get everything they want develop a sense of entitlement, with the assumption that things should come easily and on demand. Not only is this unrealistic, but such a sense of entitlement fosters a very self-centered view of life, which can lead to relationship problems as adults. - Kids who don't have to work for things are deprived of the opportunity to develop self-esteem. Self-esteem doesn't come from the brand of sneakers they wear. Nor does it come from merely being told that they're a good person. It comes from a sense of competence, which develops through sustained effort toward a goal (e.g., saving up for those special sneakers.) - Research shows that kids who don't learn to postpone gratification may not develop the "emotional intelligence" that is important for long-term success in life. Emotional intelligence includes skills such as self-control, confidence, empathy and communication. So, to help both your wallet and your kids, here are some tips for setting limits on back-to-school expenditures: 1. Decide in advance how much you plan to spend. Divide your list into two categories: Necessities and Want-to-haves. Concentrate on the former. 2. If your children are of middle-school age or older, involve them in the planning. Give them a budget and show them the sale flyers. See what they can come up with. When kids are involved in all stages of a decision-making process, they are more cooperative. 3. For younger children who demand a cartoon logo on every article of clothing, tell them how many such items you will allow, and let them pick the specific items. For example, if you allow two, they might pick a sweatshirt and a backpack, or a jacket and a notebook. You can also set a dollar limit on items with licensed characters. Allowing some degree of choice helps younger children feel a sense of mastery and control. 4. When you go on the shopping trip, don't rush through it. Allow time for lunch or videogame breaks. In this way, the shopping trip becomes a shared family experience, not just a mad rush to acquire things. 5. Set limits not just on the dollar amount you'll be spending, but also on what is acceptable. Your teenager may insist on certain clothing styles that you don't approve of. If she starts arguing with you at the store, calmly tell her it's time to go home. If she continues arguing in the car, don't try to reason with her; she's too angry to listen to logic at that time. However, you can offer to take her shopping on another day when she has settled down. 6. If your child insists that he absolutely needs something that is not in your budget, make a deal with him to allow him to earn money toward it by doing extra chores. However, don't buy the item until he has earned the money. This is very important, because it helps your child learn to plan and to work toward a goal. He will also appreciate more an item that he had to work for. 7. If you're like many parents, you try to set limits or to say "No", but the kids whine and complain so much that you eventually give in. Try your best not to succumb. If you give in, you are inadvertently teaching your children that if they whine long enough, they will eventually get their way. Alkaline Diet - How to Balance the pH Level and Reduce Body Acids
by clemie - Tuesday, 25 March 2008, 08:57 PM
Anyone in the world

By Thorsten Neudeck Alkaline Lifestyle - Why is it Important? Why change to an alkaline lifestyle? Because our bodies are constantly over-acidified! Due to our modern lifestyles we eat too much acid-producing food like dairy, sugar and animal protein, and expose our bodies to pollution, smoking, drugs and excessive intake of foods. We are fouling our bodies with any number of transgressions which compromise the balance of our internal alkaline fluids. And all this causes acid wastes to build up in the body! The pH level, the acid-alkaline measurement of our body, affects every single one of our cells. A constantly imbalanced pH level wont be tolerated by our system, which may result in obesity (we create fat cells to carry acids away from our vital organs), allergies (the absorption of undigested proteins due to an overly acidic body is a major cause of allergy conditions) and fatigue (an over-acidified body produces toxins and weakens the bodys ability to produces enzymes and hormones). If left untreated, a chronically over-acidic body will disturb and interrupt cellular activities and functions, and will let us age early. Eat More Greens & Vegetables! To reverse this process we must include generous amounts of alkaline forming food in our diet. But what is the best way to change easily to an alkaline diet? As mother always said: Eat more salad, greens and vegetables, at best 5x a day! She is right, since this is the only real and healthy nutrition for us humans. Particularly important for us is the green plant pigment chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the only known and existing substance that is able to transform sunlight into eatable energy a process, without there would not be life on this planet! In other words: we eat sunlight when we eat salad, greens and vegetables. Yet, our daily lifestyles dont allow us to eat 5x a day healthy greens. Therefore, anybody who wants to alkalize the cell system and cares about health and healthy lifestyles, should consider the intake of sprouted greens and vegetables capsules or powder (e.g. SuperGreens by InnerLight), which allow us to maintain our daily habits - but to consume enough greens to satisfy both our body and our mothers. These kinds of supplements help to support an alkaline diet, balance pH Levels, eliminate acid wastes from the body and restore the overall health. Balance-pH is dedicated to educate people all over the world regarding the constantly growing over-acidification of our cell system. Acidic wastes grow inside the body due to unhealthy lifestyles, which is the reason for many diseases. Depression Treatments and Symptoms of Anxiety Depression
by clemie - Sunday, 23 March 2008, 10:33 PM
Anyone in the world

By Michael Rad When the young people are concerned, the psychiatric factors are the ones that influence the anxiety depression symptoms. People have to be thought by the specialist how to deal with the stress factors and also they need to know how to improve their own capacity of handling these stressing factors. Almost the majority of the anxiety depression symptoms are very respondent to different treatments, especially to medication. As a modality of reducing stress, anyone can cut some hours from the work schedule program and a refusal of some social obligations. As for the more improved stress confrontation capacity, the patient is supposed to do a lot of relaxing exercises, more adequate sleeping hours and a healthy diet. Finding an effective antidepressant drug is not an easy task, as every individual has one particular set of characteristics and therefore it is not possible a priori to establish which antidepressant will be that effective one. Beyond to depression medication, other treatments like psychotherapy, integrated therapy and depression medication, electro convulsion therapy and the therapy with light are today available. Each one of these approaches has detailed prescription lists. As an example, the depression medication treatment and that psychotherapy one have a rate success from 60 to 80%. This integrated modality has one of its particular indications in the advanced shapes of depression. Some patients show the persistence of residual symptoms between an episode and the other and in the shapes in which depression medication or psychotherapy alone is not effective. There is a large number of anti depression drugs that can help remedy the harmful effects of the depressive symptoms but some of them have more side effects than others and this is the reason why they get dangerous. Considering from the price point of view, there are cheaper and more expensive anti depression drugs that can be used for treating this disease, but they may have severe side effects, such as: wither mouth, urine abstain, sedation and a lot of sexual problems. Talking about sexual mal functions, some drugs, which were recently discovered, characterize an important development regarding the sexual abnormality. Each medication used for treating the disease in question has a skimpy different profile of side effects, so it may be possible for one to try several solution treatments in order for the doctor to discover the most appropriate one. Relationship Reality: Are Your Relationships Based In Reality or Fantasy?
by clemie - Thursday, 20 March 2008, 11:44 AM
Anyone in the world

By Shawn Nelson Within the next two to three minutes, you will uncover if you have had relationships based in reality or fantasy! I want you to recall a failed relationship and ask yourself one question, "Why didn't it work?" Initially, you may answer, "They cheated, lied, changed, etc." But be honest with yourself. Without honesty there cannot be any changes in your life. The truth may be you created a world in which this person could not live up too! "How is that possible," is what you are thinking, "I would never do such a thing!" Maybe not intentionally but you do it! Heck, we all do it until we realize we are doing it! Too often you project your image of the person onto them. Thus, creating your fantasy person. We see only the image we created. This is important to recognize early on because at no point did the person ask you to think so highly of them. You focus on their "potential" and figure eventually he/she will get to that place he/she should be to make you happy. However, once the individual steps outside of the image you created you begin to think, "They changed!" But in reality they were the same all a long. In essence, what you have done was create a "virtual reality" or "fantasy world" based on the images present in your mind. That is why many of us get hurt in our relationships. We are not realistic but idealistic. What's the difference between a Realistic person and an Idealistic person? Realistic:

A realistic person will go into a relationship with their eyes open
A realistic person will lay the cards on the table and get down to details of what the relationship is going to be
A realistic person will speak their mind and say what they feel even though it may hurt the person in the short term
A realistic person is honest with the individual regarding their life and shows they care about the person and not focused on what they can get from the individual
A realistic person understands there will be problems and issues but working together they can overcome anything
A realistic person tends to be more genuine in their love and support
And much, much more

Idealistic:

The idealistic person will forgo the communication and move straight into sex
